Winter Car Care: Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Huddersfield’s Cold Snaps

Cold, wet weather puts extra strain on your car, and February is exactly the time of year local drivers notice the effects. Here’s what the Milnsbridge Garage team recommends checking before the next cold snap hits Huddersfield.

Battery health

Cold weather is the number one cause of flat batteries. If your car has been slow to start, or your battery is more than four years old, it’s worth having it tested before it lets you down completely. We can test and replace batteries on the spot.

Tyre tread and pressure

Legal tread depth is 1.6mm, but for winter grip on wet and icy roads we recommend at least 3mm. Cold temperatures also drop tyre pressure, so check it monthly with a gauge rather than relying on how the tyres look.

Antifreeze and screen wash

Make sure your coolant has the right antifreeze concentration to stop it freezing in the engine, and top up screen wash with a proper winter fluid rather than diluting it too much – a frozen washer system is one of the most common winter breakdown calls we see.

Book a winter health check

If you’d rather leave it to the professionals, book a winter health check with Milnsbridge Garage. We’ll inspect your battery, tyres, lights, wipers and fluid levels, and let you know about anything that needs attention before it becomes a bigger problem.
